How Career Guidance and Counselling Support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
By Prof. Yugantar Ballal, HoD, WeLearn India
In today's rapidly changing world, career guidance and counselling are no longer optional support services — they are essential tools for building a sustainable future. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to create a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous world by 2030, and career counselling plays a critical role in achieving many of these goals.
Schools and universities that integrate structured career guidance and counselling into their educational ecosystem actively contribute towards achieving the SDGs by helping students make informed academic and career decisions, improving employability, and promoting emotional well-being.
SDG 4 – Quality Education
Career guidance helps students make informed educational choices aligned with their interests, aptitude, personality, and learning styles. Through psychometric assessments and counselling, students gain clarity about suitable career pathways, reducing confusion, academic stress, and dropout rates. Institutions that provide career counselling create more inclusive and future-ready learning environments.
SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
When students choose careers based on their strengths and aspirations, they are more likely to become productive, skilled, and satisfied professionals. Career counselling bridges the gap between education and employability, helping schools and universities prepare students for meaningful careers and contributing to economic growth.
SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
Career confusion and academic pressure are major causes of stress among students and parents. Proper counselling improves emotional well-being, confidence, and decision-making abilities. Educational institutions that support career counselling also support student mental wellness and resilience.
SDG 5 – Gender Equality
Career counselling encourages students — especially girls — to explore non-traditional career pathways and break stereotypes. Equal access to career information and guidance promotes empowerment and inclusive opportunities for all genders.
SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities
Students from Tier 2, Tier 3, and rural regions often lack access to structured career guidance. Schools and universities that implement counselling initiatives help democratize access to opportunities, reducing inequalities in education and career exposure.
Building Future-Ready Citizens
The future of work is evolving rapidly with AI, automation, sustainability, and global careers reshaping industries. Career guidance helps students understand emerging careers, develop essential skills, and align themselves with future workforce needs.
Career counselling is not just about choosing a profession — it is about helping individuals discover purpose, contribute meaningfully to society, and create a sustainable future for themselves and the world.
At WeLearn India, we believe that schools and universities that prioritize career guidance are not only shaping successful careers but are also contributing directly to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
